SPORT BOAT LICENSE IN THE BALEARIC ISLANDS

Whether you want to speed through the waves on a jet ski or explore the beauty of Mallorca on a motor yacht, you can't do this in the Balearic Islands without a license. To ensure you're not only navigating Spanish waters legally but also insured in case of an accident, you should definitely have an officially recognized license. Until early 2017, the necessary knowledge for the "sports boat license" could be acquired through theory and practical lessons in the Balearic Islands, but you had to travel to Germany to take the exam. This changed in spring 2017. Now you can conveniently take the exam during your vacation and start your trip directly on your own yacht. But before you choose a boating school, you should take a closer look.

BOAT SCHOOLS IN MALLORCA: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Even a simple comparison of the prices offered by different boating schools reveals striking differences. Many schools lure students with low prices, but these usually come with a catch. Often, time is cut to save costs. For students, this means insufficient knowledge and practical experience are imparted. This is typically reflected in the success rates of those graduating. An instructor for three hours over three evenings is simply not enough to efficiently convey the necessary knowledge. Of course, there are now many ways to acquire theoretical knowledge through apps and self-study, but the difference becomes apparent when it comes to practical application. A lasting learning experience, one that fosters deep understanding through expert instruction, is irreplaceable. And, above all, it cannot be accommodated in these online courses due to time constraints.

THIS IS WHAT MAKES A GOOD BOAT DRIVING SCHOOL

A good boating school teaches nautical knots, maritime law, seamanship, and the interpretation of weather conditions. Intensive navigation training, chart reading, and knot tying are essential. This knowledge requires several days of instruction. Only in this way can the material be truly understood and the learned skills safely applied in the future.

THIS IS WHAT THE EXAM CONSISTS OF.

Just like a car driving license, the recreational boating license exam consists of two parts: a theoretical and a practical exam. You must pass both parts to become a proud captain with a recreational boating license.

THEORETICAL EXAMINATION

The theoretical exam consists of 39 multiple-choice questions from various areas. In addition, there is a navigation exercise comprised of several sub-questions. It is important to note that various factors, such as wind, currents, and all other relevant conditions, must be taken into account. The theoretical exam is limited to 60 minutes.

PRACTICAL EXAM

The practical exam is divided into two parts. First, there are the mandatory maneuvers, such as casting off, navigating by compass, and rescue maneuvers. In addition, there are at least three optional maneuvers. These include, among others, stopping in a controlled manner, navigating by navigational marks, and correctly donning life jackets. The practical exam is completed quickly. It typically only takes 15 minutes of actual sailing time.

Our tip: Have different boats and yachts shown to you on site to gain initial experience with the various types of boats.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT DRIVING SCHOOL

Before you begin, carefully consider your choice of boating school. Review their offerings and read student reviews to ensure you're dealing with a reputable school. Always ask the boating school if they offer any advanced training courses afterward. Safe boat handling and relevant experience are essential prerequisites for bareboat charters. Finally, inquire whether the boating license can be renewed in Germany if you're unable to complete it during your vacation.
